Is your wormer actually working, or even necessary at all? There is a huge amount of resistance to most wormers and there is NO EVIDENCE that rotating wormers slows resistance either! 80% of worms are carried by 20% of horses and by doing faecal egg counts (FEC) every 4 months, these horses can be identified and only these treated. This means some horses are not treated and their worms are not exposed to the wormer and cannot develop resistance. This susceptible worms breed with resistant worms to dilute the surviving population of worms.
Please collect a small (x2 tablespoon) sample of FRESH (<12 hours) manure in a sealed zip-loco bag and drop at Emerald Vet Clinic for results within 24 hours.
There are exceptions to this and please note FEC only pick up adult worms laying eggs and do not identify tapeworm, bots or pin worms. A large burden of immature small red worms can cause serious health problems, so we recommend treating with modification/praziquantel combined (Equest plus tape) in winter to combat this, in addition to regular FECs. Horse <2 years old are more susceptible to worms so should be wormed at regular intervals. Pregnant mares should also be wormed prior to foaling to reduce egg shedding and risk to the foal.
